Named after General Thomas Hinds, who was a hero in the Battle of New Orleans, Hinds County, MS is located to the west of Rankin County and to the east of Warren County.
Thanks to its location, numerous major highways and interstates pass through the county, which is also home to a portion of the Natchez Trace Parkway.
As home to part of the Natchez Trace Parkway, Hinds County plays an important role in the preservation of history.
Designated as an All-American Road and maintained by the National Park Service, the parkway extends a total of 444 miles from Mississippi to Tennessee and commemorates the old Natchez Trace. The trace, which was used by Native Americans for centuries, was used by European and American traders, emigrants and explorers during the 18th and 19th centuries. With more than 50 access points throughout three states, the parkway is limited to non-commercial traffic and has a speed limit of just 50 miles per hour.
A number of towns and cities are located in Hinds County, MS, including the capital city of Jackson.
Other cities located in Hinds County, MS include Clinton, Raymond and Byram. Towns located within the county include Bolton, Edwards, Learned, Terry and Utica, while unincorporated places include Brownsville and Pocahontas.
Children who live in Hinds County, MS are served by one of three public school districts.
These include Clinton Public School District, Hinds County School District and Jackson Public School District. The county is also home to several private schools, such as Rebul Academy in Learned and Jackson Academy and Hillcrest Christian School in Jackson.
Adult who live in Hinds County, MS have several colleges and universities to select from if they wish to take their education further.
Several of these colleges and universities can be found in the capital city of Jackson. These include Belhaven University, Jackson State University, Millsaps College, Mississippi College School of Law, Reformed Theological Seminary, University of Mississippi Medical Center and Wesley Biblical Seminary. Hinds Community College can be found in Raymond, while Clinton is home to Mississippi College and Tougaloo College is located in the town of Tougaloo.
As home to the capital city, Hinds County, MS features many of the state’s major government offices and facilities.
The headquarters for the Mississippi Department of Human Services, for example, is located in Jackson. Furthermore, the department’s Division of Youth Services’ Oakley Training School is located in an unincorporated part of the county. The Mississippi Department of Corrections, which operates the Jackson Probation and Parole Office in Jackson, is also headquartered in the capital city.
